Farewell To The Child

Delancey waited in the reception area of the hospital, sitting on a plastic chair and dozing off. He woke up as Gabriel came into the room from the surgery and sat next to him.

“Are you alright?” Delancey asked him.

Gabriel nodded.

“I have, like, a hundred stitches.” He looked at his bandaged arm and hand. “Now I’m waiting for the injections. Thank you for coming.”

“What happened there, son?”

Gabriel went quiet. He thought for a while.

“It seems … it seems it’s not only the things made by us that have their spirits. It seems nature has its spirits as well. And Andrea can command them. She escaped the hospital.”

Delancey groaned and covered his eyes.

“Why is it me?” he asked. “I don’t even believe in yeti. Do I need to be in the middle of this metaphysical shitstorm?”

“She can command animals. Dogs, bats, birds,” Gabriel continued. “They protect her … and apparently they will kill for her too.”

“Why did she want to kill you? You pick on her at school or something?”

“No, I…” Gabriel shook his head. It was difficult. “Agent Delancey, on the contrary.”

“Broken heart, maybe?”

“I don’t know. I was so delighted she can see the invisible, too, that I shared I command demons … and she just went mad. Sent those dogs on me.”

“Where is she now? Do you know?”

“She was going somewhere. We met by the hospital.”

“Well, I don’t know what we can do about her, with the Princes on their killing spree. But she’s obviously dangerous.”

“I don’t know if she’s dangerous to the others,” Gabriel said. “She became aggressive only after I said I was an Ombudsman.”

“Okay, but looking at your stitches, I don’t think it was a balanced reaction, no?”

“No, you’re right.”

“So I put her on our lists again, but this time not as missing, as wanted.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Don’t try to visit her anymore, eh, son?”

“You bet I won’t,” Gabriel said.

Delancey nodded at patted Gabriel on his leg. “Okay. Wait here for your rabies shot. I will go and thank the doctor who patched you up and tell him to make do without the paperwork.”

“Thank you, Agent. “

“As for you, make sure you go and take a proper rest. Stay at home for a few days. I mean, you do have a place to stay…?”

“I do.”

Delancey looked at him dubiously. This teenager was something else.

“Agent Delancey?”

“Yes?”

“What about my father? Do you know anything?”

“Not yet, sorry. I made a regular search, but it turned out nothing. Like he never existed. I asked Oscar to dig a little deeper, but we really had a lot of work recently.”

“It’s important for me.”

“I know. Sorry. I’ll remind him tomorrow.”

“And the Princes? Are you getting closer to them?”

“I think we almost have them. Don’t worry.”

Gabriel understood it was a lie.
